If Derek was animal instead of a boy, say a pig for instanced he would certainly be considered by a farmer as being the runt of the litter. Now of course, he is a healthy young boy but that's the thing for a fourteen year old he is still small, or as his sister would call him a little squirt, only out of earshot of their parents. It's funny given that their parents aren't exactly short, his mum being average height and his dad a reasonable five foot ten inches, even his sister his a good head taller than him. It certainly doesn't help that he has such a small round face, that somewhat overshadowed by his round spectacles and consitantly standing to attention blonde hair. Something a kin to plugging your finger in a socket is the look. Derek isn't bothered by the height thing, he has far more important things to deal with, which also explain why he seemingly doesn't care about the state of his clothes, or washing.

Character Story

Personality: How best to sum up Derek? In the words of his parents he is very much an absent minded professor. Constantly leaving a trail of items behind him as other things grab his attention. It's not that he has a short attention span more that he can very easily become fascinated by something or another, caught in the moment of experimenting. He's constantly scribbling in his little notebooks, making notes and observations of his latest potion. He's forgetful of what he deems trivial things, like the day of the week for instance, and whilst he might not always remember when someone's birthday is at the drop of a hat, he will always give them what he deems a thoughtful gift, to his friends well the few that can deal with Derek, caution is often the watch word with his 'gifts' as they have been known to inadvertently turn pet cats bright pink. His outlook on life his a cheerful one, and few things grind him down even if at times he has been tripped up on purpose he just tries not to let it bother him.

Personal History

Once day there was this big bang....no wait, wrong history. One day in the spring of 1982, a baby was born. It was a tiny little thing, more limbs than anything else, but it soon came to be called Derek. Which for anyone else could be considered a bit of a curse, but for the parents it was a nice name, and was in fact the name of a much loved great-grandparent. He wasn't the first child, he was in fact the second, they couple having already had a girl two years previous, a little girl who was first fascinated by her little brother wanting to look after him, mollycoddle...then the years past and well she got bored of that.

The years passed and young Derek grew up, well he got older whether or not he was getting any taller remained to be seen. What was noticeable and encouraged by his parents was his natural curiosity as to how things worked. Even though he was yet to show his magical abilities he was certainly interested in his parents potion, and charms books, asking questions, and there were many, at any chance he got and he wasn't that bothered about who he asked. Asking strangers questions was certainly not encouraged but he did it anyway, sidling up to people in shops.

The day he showed his abilities was the day that Derek just wanted to know what would happen if you mixed various ingredients together. The result was a huge cloud of flour going everywhere and Derek floating above it all.

Eventually his parents simply had to turn the shed at the bottom of the garden into a place for Derek to play/experiment, his mum telling him to try not to turn the neighbours cat yellow again all the while being shown things by his dad. Many a happy Sunday was passed down in the bottom of the garden dissecting a Muggle electronic devices.

Before they all knew it though Derek, accompanied by his parents, grandparents and dotting aunts and uncles was packed off to school, much to the disdain of his older sister who wanted nothing more than to be away from her little brother, mainly because she was tired of him trying to come up with the world's best shampoo only to find it burnt holes in her towels. But at least she felt assured that she wouldn't be in the same house as her brother, hopefully, and it was the case. Though some of close friends felt certain she was a little worried that her brother would have trouble or wouldn't cope on his own. But like with most things in life Derek just ambled through it, letting everything wash over him. Anyway, he was more interested in how the Sorting Hat worked, or working out what spells were used to make sure the house points were dispensed or deducted correctly. That's how he spent his life at school, ambling about, losing quills, shoes, books, half a trouser leg along the way. Sure he is aware of what's going on beyond his little bubble, but the only way he has ever coped is by sticking his head in his notebooks and tinkering with potions and anything else he can lay his hand too.
