JKR's New Book

[Star Dare]

I'm not sure if anyone has seen this yet (although I'm sure some of you have), but JKR is coming out with a new adult book on September (I think) 27th. It's called The Casual Vacancy, (You can read about it here).

I was just wondering what everyones thoughts are about this. Are you guys excited? Worried? I'm kind've a mixture of the two, because I think it'll be really really interesting to read something else of hers, but how can it possibly measure up to Harry Potter?

Reading the summery makes it sound interesting and makes me sort of want to read it. The only problem with trying to read it is that I know I'll be sitting there comparing everything with Harry Potter.

I am of the opinion that we should judge this book on its own merits instead of trying to compare it to HP/expect it to be like HP. I will be looking forward to this book regardless, and when I read it I don't think that Harry will cross my mind at all.

Ditto Cody, though to be honest I don't know if I'll read it any time soon. I know I will at some point just because it's by J.K, but it doesn't look like my kind of thing so I probably wouldn't bother with it otherwise. I always wondered if whenever she wrote a new book she might publish it under a pen-name. Personally I would've done because I'd be curious to see how it'd do on its own, so many people will buy it just because she wrote Harry Potter.

I was a proponent of the Pen-name theory too, but I suppose that in the 21st century it would be impossible for someone of her level of fame to do that without the truth getting out.

I read the synopsis that was released on the book and it doesn't sound like the type of book I would normally pick up. Because of that I'm on the fence about reading it. I likely will because of the fact that it's J.K. and when I've done similar things in the past I've been pleasantly surprised. The thing I worry about is the fact that people will be judging the book more harshly because of the fact that it is written by J.K.

I'm pretty good at distinguishing books and movies... so I'm not worried that I will be comparing it to Potter.... but I think it will be the thing that sort of "kills" the book for most people. I hate to say it, but I see it being a total flop simply because from the looks of it, she went as completely NOT POTTER as possible. So when the readers buy it thinking they will get something even similar to Potter.... and it isn't... they'll just start talking crap about it rather than taking it as a seperate book.

I'll read it. It seems like the type of book (I read pretty much everything but romance and horror) that I would pick up, even if it wasn't by J.K. It's like Liz stated, I've read books written by authors that have written entirely different series' and found myself happy with the results. Twilight, for example, sucked, but the other stand-alone that she wrote, The Host, is actually pretty darn good.

I'm excited for it, and I know I will be buying it. I love me some mystery. I'm pretty sure the only thing I would find myself comparing the HP, however, would be her writing style (since it is written for adults and not 'children') and her character depth. Then again, I compare a lot of other books that I read to HP, and I actually use her in depth knowledge of her characters are a model for how well I should mold my own for the novel I started.

Can't wait to read it.
