Denial's Not Just a River In Egypt

[Teruki Ngai]

Teruki Ngai sat quietly outside in the cherry blossom gardens. His legs were stretched out in front of him and a book was settled in his lap. He was supposed to be reading the book, well a chapter of the book, for defense class, but his mind was off somewhere completely different. The sixteen year old sighed as he leaned his head back against the tree he was leaning against and allowed his eyes to close. His mind drifted to other things and something was nagging him that he was forgetting something. For the life of him the teen couldn't figure out what he was forgetting at the moment.

He was pretty sure he hadn't made plans with Lin today...or had he? If he had then he'd forgotten them and it was to late to go make it up to her now. Deciding that whatever he was forgetting wasn't worth the effort of trying to remember, if he couldn't remember then it wasn't worth it to begin with, so he lifted his head and opened his eyes. He had to get this chapter read.

[Lin Jinjing Qiao]

No, there hadn't been any plans between him and Lin. But as she sat in the Kitsunes' common room, aimlessly flicking through the pages of a teen fashion magazine, she wished there had. Her friends had abandoned her to do homework, or meet their own boyfriends. And Lin, being extremely fond of her Queen Bee status, didn't like sitting around on her own at all. Sure, she was popular enough to do whatever she wanted without ever being accused of any flaw, but people might talk behind her back and she didn't like it. No, she had a reputation to hold up.

And so, a smile on her lips, the Fourth Year put her magazine down and stored it in her school bag, then walking out of the common room and out onto the grounds of Mahoutokoro. She'd find somebody, anybody, to talk to. And when her gaze fell on an all too familiar face, she giggled a little in happiness and skipped toward Teruki. It had been about time she found herself a boyfriend.

Teruki flipped the page in the book rolling his eyes as the author seemed to ramble on about one cutting hex. Could this man not find something more interesting to ramble about? There were so many other interesting spells, hexes, and jinxes out there and this author chose the boring cutting hex? The teen was getting ready to just toss the book aside when he heard someone coming his way. He blinked slowly and looked up to see the girl who had occupied his thoughts moments ago skipping towards him.

A small smile, that didn't really reach his eyes, came across his lips as he closed the book and set it to the side. "Lin," he greeted, "what brings you out here?" For a moment his thoughts went back to earlier and the thought of possibly having plans with the other girl. Was that why she had come out here? To chew him out about forgetting or something?

Lin wore a much brighter smile than him as she planted a quick kiss on his lips. His words weren't as loving as she'd liked them to be, but right now she was just glad to finally have found some company. Despite her own lovebird behavior she gave a truthful "Boredom," as reply to his question of why she'd come outside. "There's nothing going on in the common room," she explained and from her tone of voice it was obvious she was displeased with this fact. Being a bit of an attention seeker, Lin definitely needed her daily share of admiration and popularity.

Teruki didn't return the kiss, but he didn't turn away from it either. He nodded in understanding when Lin explained her reasons for being outside. He ignored the tone of she completed her explanation in and leaned his head back against the tree. "There was probably something going on," he assured her, "you just don't know where it's at or aren't supposed to be involved in it." Normally Teruki knew where the interesting things were in the school, but today school work came before fun and entertainment. "So you decided to come outside and sit?" he asked after a moment.

"That's highly unlikely," Lin argued, pouting a little because he'd hurt her pride. She always knew about everything! And by now his almost cold tone started to bother her. Nevertheless, the younger girl tried to keep her own happy behavior up, maybe it'd turn him friendlier, too. "Exactly."

[Teruki Ngai]

Teruki felt the corners of his lips turn up in a small smirk at the girl's pout. "No," he teased, "you just wish it was highly unlikely." His tone had softened up a bit so that he didn't sound as cold towards the girl sitting next to him. When she agreed that she had just decided to come outside and sit he chuckled. "Is it helping your boredom at all?"

No, she realized she wasn't done with her anger about him yet. She looked at him sourly, wondering what the hell had happened to the guy who'd originally been so nice to her. Finally she'd managed to find a boyfriend, a lovely one no less, and here he was acting like an idiot! Maybe her thoughts were a bit drastic, based mainly on the little bit of teasing he currently did, but she'd always been a bit of a drama queen, so what else did you expect. She noticed, however, that his features turned a little softer now that he'd hurt her enough, and his tone wasn't quite as cold anymore either. "It does, because now I am being harassed by my own boyfriend," she said with another small pout, folding her arms in front of her body.

Nothing had happened to Teruki, not really. He just had a lot of stuff on his mind at the moment and adding Lin being bored wasn't something he needed. Still she was his girlfriend and even when he was in a bad mood he didn't need to take it out on her. When she mentioned being harassed by him Teru gave a fake gasp and placed a hand on his chest. "I would never harass my girlfriend," he told her with a slight grin as he leaned forward a bit, "that would make me a not so nice boyfriend and we can't have that."

He allowed his hand to drop before looking at Lin sitting next to him pouting. With a small grin that just screamed he was up to something the sixteen year old reached out and placed a finger on each side of the girl's lips before slightly pushing up as if trying to make her smile. "Come on now," he said, "turn that frown upside down. Come on. Come on." Each time he said "come on" he would push the corners of her lips upwards.

Lin wanted to tell him just how of a not so nice boyfriend he was, but didn't get the chance. As she was just about to open her mouth, his fingers touched her lips and she hesitated to see what he was up to. The corners of her mouth being pushed upward, again and again, the Chinese girl had no other chance but to start smiling for real. "Oh, you are so silly!" She told him, with a laugh however, aimlessly slapping his hand away with her own.

Teruki smirked when Lin started smiling on her own and pulled his hands back when she aimlessly slapped at them. He chuckled at the girl and nodded in agreement to her words. "I've been told that before," he informed her as he leaned back against the tree, "it just means that I keep things interesting."

[Lin Jinjing Qiao]

Lin smiled, but the thoughts inside her head were performing a race right now and it was quite dramatic. The girl wasn't exactly sure what idea to concentrate on first, but some of this needed to get our or she'd explode, she was certain. "Teruki, do you what is interesting?" She started and her smile got a little smaller, because a thoughtful expression fought its way onto her features. "That you're so different. I mean, I'm not saying that's exactly a bad thing, but... You're nothing like other boyfriends I've had."

He blinked when Lin suddenly addressed him about what was interesting. "Uhm...no," he said as he quickly tried to think of what the girl might be talking about. Luckily for him he didn't have to wait long for her to fill him in on what was going through her mind. Teruki took a moment to process what she had just told him with a small frown on his face. "I would hope that I'm not like the others," he finally told her with a small smirk after a moment, "after all if I was like them then you never would have went out with me."

"That's not true. They were not all bad," she said, giving him an almost scolding look. She'd had a few boyfriends before, even if those relationships could hardly be considered such. She'd been so young, after all, and at twelve you didn't know what love was! Now she was wiser. She'd had boyfriends in the years between her 12th and 14th birthday, sure, but still.

"What I mean is.. You're not behaving as if you like me. Or like.. Not even me, personally, but me as a .. girl.." Her thoughts were jumbled and she had a hard time diggin' through them, and an even harder time putting them into words.

Teruki frowned slightly at Lin's words. He was behaving like he liked her? Liked girls? Wait, what? He wasn't very sure what to say to her. He knew he needed to protest those words. Protest that he did like her, did like that she was a girl. But honestly he didn't know. His thoughts were almost as jumbled as Lin's were. Teru didn't have the heart to point out to Lin that he'd only asked her out because all of his friends had girlfriends and he'd felt odd not having one. Merlin he felt weird having a girlfriend. Letting out a quiet sigh he decided he should probably try to fix whatever this mess was that he had just made. "Of course I like you," he told her, "I asked you out didn't I?"

In his mind that should have been enough to prove that he liked her. After all why would you ask someone out and start dating them if you didn't like them? The fact that he'd done it in hopes of not feeling weird didn't count either.

"Yeah," Lin commented, sort of agreeing with his words. Usually, when a boy asked a girl out, it meant he liked her. But still! Something here was wrong, or different at least, and she wanted to find out what it was! She wasn't done with this yet. The girl showed a friendly smile and slightly tipped her head to the side. "Alright. So, what is it that you like so much about me?" Maybe this would get them further.

Teruki froze for a moment when Lin asked what about her he liked. He opened his mouth to say something but nothing was coming to mind. "Oh...uhm....I like that....that your...you're....uh...nice? And kind?" It was supposed to come out as statements, but they came out more as questions. "And you're cute?" The only reason he'd really asked her out instead of some other girl is because she was his friend already and dating a girl couldn't be that much different than being friends with her, right?"

[Lin Jinjing Qiao]

Lin smiled as she was being complimented, despite the fact that he didn't seem to really mean those things. "I'm your first ever girlfriend, am I not?" she asked him, her head still tipped to the side and a curious look on her face.

Apparently his random guesses at answering her question had worked well. She seemed to believe him and she was smiling. That was a good thing, right? Then she turned around and asked something that they both already knew. "Yes," he said a little confused as to why this mattered.

[Lin Jinjing Qiao]

Lin was beginning to get a bit frustrated. Not really because of Teruki, but because of herself, as she felt like there was something going on but she couldn't put her finger on it. Something was odd about him, but what? This, indeed, was very frustrating. Having no other ideas how to get him to say what she wanted to know, and no clues what this might be, Lin frowned and pulled a grimace. "Do you like boys or something?" she spoke, not even meaning these words but just going for a very, very random guess. It was a stupid guess, of course, since he was going out with her, but well.

He was getting a weird feeling from Lin's odd questioning. Why in the world would she ask why he liked her and about her being his first girlfriend? Did it even matter? After all someone had to be the first one, right? Then she turned around and made her intentions clear. The boy's eyes widened and he was rather glad he didn't have a drink or he would have spit it all over her. "What?!" he cried in shock and horror, "why in the world would you ask something like that?" It wasn't that he had anything against guys liking guys, after all his older brother was dating another guy, but he wasn't like that. "No...I...I don't like guys. That's just...what made you even think that?"

[Lin Jinjing Qiao]

"I don't know!" Lin blurted out, replying to his question right away because her words had just been ramdon babbling pretty much and she didn't want him to shout at her because of that. Of course he had all right to do so, as she'd just asked him a somewhat offeding question. Lin had no problem with gays at all, but knew that most boys didn't take well to being .. well, asked such a question. And Teruki was the best example.

The girl sighed, tipping her head a little to the side as she looked at him, unhappy but unsure for what reason. "I'm sorry, that just.. slipped. I don't really think you like boys, after all you would not have asked me out if you did," she said, blowing a strand of her out of her face. But then her eyes went wide, as another realization hit her. "Wait, is this the reason why you're going out with me? To hide your real feelings? I'm honored, but I don't want to be a backup plan!" If Lin once had a plan inside her head, it was hard to prove her wrong. Good luck to Teruki regarding this.

Teruki was trying to figure out where in the world Lin had gotten the idea that he liked other guys. Was it the walk he walked? Dressed? The way he talked? He didn't know what in the world he'd done to make his girlfriend of all people ask him if he were gay. The sixteen year old let out a harsh sigh and ran a hand through his hair as Lin blurted out, rather loudly at that, that she had no idea why she'd asked such a question. "That's not something you should go around just blurting out," he told her with a frown as he shot a small glare at her, "some people get really offended by such questions."

The teen nodded along in agreement with Lin when the girl pointed out to both of them that he had asked her out so obviously he liked girls. When she started in on her new idea about him using her to hide his feels his head snapped to look at her with wide eyes. "Wh..what?!" he shrieked, "why would you think that? No...I...I'm not using you to hide my feelings. Merlin Lin, if you don't want to date me all you have to do is say something. You don't have to go around trying to make up an excuse to get rid of me." Really all she had to do was tell him she wanted to break up. The girl didn't have to try and make him gay or something. He would understand if she just wanted to break up.

He let out another sigh as his head thunked back against the tree he was leaning against. Having a girlfriend was harder work than he'd first believed it to be and he was finding that he didn't like it much at all.

Lin might have frowned as well, since their conversation was much less than pleasant, but for some reason she had a thoughtful expression on her face rather than a sad one. She was in deep thought, as something just bugged her about all of this.

"What? No! That's not it, Teruki. I'm not trying to get rid of you. I like you, a lot. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have even talked about all this crap. Forgive me?" she pleaded, tilting her head and looking at him with puppy eyes. She was great at those and they usually did their work. Hopefully they would with Teruki; she was tired of their fight.
