What Are YOU Majoring in?

What are you all majoring in? Obviously this applies to college students, but if you're in high school what are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I myself wish to be an actor, and while I am kind of young and have yet to choose an actual major as of this moment in time, I have a dream and goal for my future for sure! It's not a thirty-year plan (like my father who apparently has 50% of his thirty year plan completed), but it's a destination!

I mean obviously, some of us are not yet decided, but I'm sure everyone has SOME thoughts and feelings?

So share them below, because I want to discuss and be awesome with all of you guys!

Acting is cool! I reckon actors and actress have the best job. They get to snog hot people ;) they get to be dramatic and have fun, paid well and work beside some amazing actors and actresses --- Of course there is the downside of being famous and never being left alone.... But I reckon it's a price worth paying for that line of work ^_^

What is it about acting that pulled you toward that as a career?



I myself am not in collage or high school, but I am going to be training to be a mechanic :D I actally go to the garage on Tuesday to check the place out! Being a mechanic isn't my first choice in a career, if I'm going to be honest I'd love to do what you're aiming for: Acting ^_^ I wanted to be either a Police woman, A nightclub owner or an Actress, but none of those were realisic for me, so the next best thing was Mechanics :D

I'm currently in college, so it's not like I'm actually majoring in something, but very soon I will be majoring in Law. I'm personally a fan of criminal law, although for various reasons I may instead be going for property law. Strictly speaking, it's not entirely my first choice. But here's the awkward thing: I don't know what's my first choice. I've always been intrigued in Law, but I've wavered for a very, very long time between taking it for real or not going for such a stressful line. Also with factors like that my ol' dad is rather apprehensive of the idea of me ever going for criminal law. Then the fact that I really do enjoy it, but I'm not sure to what extent. As of right now my enjoyment of the subject seems almost .. insufficient - insufficient to settle with it as a lifelong career.

Maybe there is something out there which is the one. But I guess for me, Law comes close enough.

The program I chose to study in isn't really a combination of minor and major, although I've learned that it's possible to do it that way. I'm doing a degree in German studies. No major, no minor, just three years of German studies.

And you're all gonna make fun of me if I tell you why I've decided to head down that line. >.<

Fiiiine. When I was sixteen, I started listening to Rammstein, and really got into it, and I started to want to know what the lyrics meant, and whatnot, so I decided to learn German. I was able to take German as a complementary class in my first session of Cégep, and I had the most amazing teacher ever. After that class, I joined the same school my mother had, and had German classes every Saturday morning from then on. The next summer, I participated in a linguistic student exchange, and went to Bavaria, Germany, for three hell amazing weeks (hence my adoration for Bavaria). That was 2007-2008. In 2010, well, firstly, and this sounds random, I know, but shush, I attended my first Rammstein concert. :P That same year, the principal of my German school bugged me so much that I agreed to do the B1 language exam she wanted me to do, so beginning of 2011, I set on doing that exam (which includes listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written production, and oral presentation OMG), and it shouldn't be too surprising I did the presentation on Rammstein. Coming back from one of those exams, I sneakily stalked one of my friends' beginner German classes in university, and sure, it was waaay easy, but IT WAS SO MUCH FUN OMG. It was that night I decided I had to become a German teacher.

I passed my tests sort of brilliantly, and went in Germany last summer, and I'm still taking German classes (although not during the summer), and next year I'm supposed to be taking my B2/C1 tests... Also I was supposed to go to university in September, but with the strike, who knows what's going to happen... Lastly, I'd like to point out that I went to the Rammstein concert on May 1st. It's my inspiration, for serious. It's how it all began. That, and my amazing teacher.

I'm not actually in college right now, but I will be entering this fall! :D Whoooot! My major is Psychology (with either a possible double major in Literature, or a minor in Creative Writing) and I have no idea what I want to do with it yet. I kind of want to go into Psychiatry, but then again, I don't want to. There's just a lot of pros and cons to it. :P

As for what I want to be in the future.... I don't know. There's so much that I do want to do with my life, that I haven't been able to narrow it down. I want to be a psychiatrist/therapist, a researcher, an actress, a musician, a literature professor. There's just too much to list that I want to try my hand at in some point in my life.

It sounds like you're headed down a more artistic lane, Ella. As from my own experience (I currently take Psychology as one of my three subjects at college), Psychology has often been taken as the 'Science amongst the Arts'. It's actually surprisingly scientific. I once intended to take it, but quickly lost interest once I actually started learning it in college and realized just how scientific it is. Of course, this is just my opinion, and it may have to do with the fact that A-Levels' Psychology syllabus may just be significantly different and more bland than the sort one might major in at a university. But yeah, it might be useful to take that into consideration especially if you're not a Science person. :]

I think anything is realistic if you strive for it. Haha.

And as for not being left alone, I probably speak for inexperience, I love people and don't want to be left alone. I suppose it's the attention and the ability to make money while having fun that pulled my towards it. I'm also a pretty fantastic extrovert, and I'm pretty dramatic if you ask me. I can also throw my voice. 8D

Thanks for the input! :] I've done two years of it already in high school, though high school level Psych isn't very scientific at all. From what I've told by my college advisers, there are two different types of Psych that I can major in: one that's entirely scientific, like you described, and one that is more focused on 'social ecology' which is relating to how people interact in the environments they're in. I only have one more semester left of college before I graduate with a Bachelor's degree. :D

Anyway, I'm a Secondary Social Science Education major with a minor in History. Quite obviously, I am going to be a teacher. I'll either be teaching middle or high school somewhere in the U.S. Probably Florida, since that's where I'm attending college and that will be the state that issues my teaching certificate when I graduate in December.

I really want to teach either 8th or 11th grade, as I want to teach American History. But I would eventually like to teach Advanced Placement courses. Preferably European and American History. I would also like to do graduate work in history, and be a history professor. I just have to pick an area of specialization. I'm thinking the internment of German and Japanese-Americans during World War II. But that's tentative.

The 'social ecology' one seems more towards sociology, which would probably be more towards my interest as well. Honestly, you don't want to take A-Levels Psychology. It's case study after case study loaded full of stuff like 'classical/operant conditioning', 'introspection', 'quantitative/qualitative methods', and .. oh God, the 'variables'. It boggles the brain so much I want to burn it all at the stakes screaming at Ivan Pavlov that I really don't care if getting a dog to drool at the sound of a bell is illustration of the behaviourist, humanist, or cognitivist theory. XD

It's considered the 'Science Amongst the Arts' because the study of it is actually strictly methodical. Admittedly I see the necessity for those rigid procedural experiments - how else can one study accurately the human psychology? - but I'm not a Science person in the least. At all.

If you're more towards sociology, I think you would be interested in abnormal psychology though. It's where people study about stuffs like personality disorders, clinical depression etc. The only fascinating criteria of Psychology for me. :P

I think it's just me that was bursting out laughing reading this. Not because I don't think that it's really cool that you're going into psychology and such, but because it's the Percy Weasley thing, and so I'm loling pretty hard. xD

LOL it's funny because for a psych minor, all I have to do is take 24 credit hours of psychology in any discipline, and I'm focusing on social/developmental courses because of my interest in teaching. So yes, I have used what I learn in class to do my psycho-analysis of Percy (which, might I add, is currently in the process of being edited and revised, xD)

I actually have no idea what I intend to do with my life ^.^ First, I have my A-Levels before I go to University, and then I wanted to major in English, because I intended to become a teacher. But I had the idea of doing Law too. So since I was little, I've swapped between the two - English teacher, Lawyer. And now I don't want to do either, because I've struggled in all my subjects at school this year and I want to give up school foooooooooorever :D

But yes, I'm doing my final exams next month, and then next September I'm starting university in the UK. I went through the horrible UCAS process, got all my offers, chose two universities as my first choice and insurance choice, and now all I have to do is pass my exams.

I'm studying English Literature and Creative Writing, which I guess in the American system that would be a double major sort of thing, since I learn both subjects, and an equal amount of both like a 50/50 sort of thing. And oh my god I'm so excited, literally this whole year I've been dreaming about university, and I check the University of Surrey website almost weekly because it's my first choice. Gahh I'm just so excited about this, haha!

NO, I am not an actor. I do mostly sound design and technologies of the arts. I also have almost completed an art minor. I also LOVE building stuffs in the scenic studio and MacGuyvering my way out of (into?) any situation. :3

Hopefully, I can do theatre work in my future -- but probably not on a large scale. Maybe in the community, or at a college. I want to go to Grad School for Theatre - Sound Design or Technology of the Arts. Very excited though, I love what I do!

I think that's really cool! I liked set design when I did it in high school. It would be really really awesome to do that for a living I think.

As of this time next year I'll have a degree in history, with a minor in anthropology. I'm still not sure what I plan on doing. I have a lot of ideas, but no set plan. Though I am leaning toward government work, for either CIA or FBI doing intelligence analysis, or what I'd really like to do, archival work (though that could be anywhere really).

Though of course, I would LOVE to go on get my masters, and my big ultimate goal, doctorate (I'd be the first person in my family to get it). I really have no idea what I'd concentrate on, with history I'd probably do English Monarchy, Modern Europe (most likely post-industrialization) or cultural history (I'd love to study American cultural change through comic books or study LGBT through out history). I have also thought about switching to Cultural Anthropology, where I have a few ideas on what I'd like to study (one of which would be educational anthropology and study how we teach history in classes, and what works per say).

I also like studying and doing slightly out there things, such as this past semester I wrote a paper on how The Hobbit could be seen as an allegory for Fredrick Engles' 'Conditions of the Working Class', or as another example of this sort of thing, do like Simon Pegg did and write about Star Wars from a Marxist perspective. Something like that...

So yeah, really no idea, just know this time next year I'll have a Bachelor degree in History.

I am doing my bachelors in medicine. I always had a passion to be a doctor, and now I am fulfilling everything I ever desired of. I really wanted to do my bachelors as a day scholar (Mom's kiddie :D ) and that too, is now possible. Though there are hard nights of study and examinations almost two months long and a lot of hard work, all together I am enjoying the ride.

Poly Sci was totally one of my options at one point, but the school I was at didn't have the full degree program - I would have had to take classes at a different university to complete the major. Now that I've transferred to a new school, I've seen that they have a full Poly Sci program with all of the courses I'd need, but I'm too invested in my English program now ♥

And Law School is one of my options for after my Bachelor's Degree. I'd probably go into Corporate Law or something like that. Or I'll just stick with Education. Or Journalism. Depends on how the next two years go >,<
