Lesson How-To
Whether you're a professor or a student,
this handy guide will help you work your way through a magical education!
Lesson Basics for Professors
Creating Lessons
- Each lesson must be designated for any combination of the four houses - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. As there are six possible combination, we ask that each professor hold a minimum of two lessons throughout the year, so that each house may have a chance to play. Because of this, there is no longer a limit to the number of students who may participate in a lesson.
- In order to preserve a permanent spot on staff for the next school year or earn the Professor's badge for this year, a professor must hold lessons for all six of the possible class combinations between September 1 and May 31.
- The six combinations are as follows:
Gryffindor / Hufflepuff
Gryffindor / Ravenclaw
Gryffindor / Slytherin
Hufflepuff / Ravenclaw
Hufflepuff / Slytherin
Ravenclaw / Slytherin
Lesson Subjects
- It is recommended that professors do some outside reading on subjects that may be appropriate for your course - for example, if you are teaching History of Magic you may want to look up various stories of Merlin or other magical folklore. You can also improvise with non-canon facts - not every lesson has to be straight from the books!
- Lessons may be repeated between house combinations only if neither house has already completed the lesson. For example, if you teach a lesson on "Boggarts" with Gryffindor/Hufflepuff, you could repeat the same lesson with Ravenclaw/Slytherin, but not with any combination including Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. You may also choose to teach unique lessons for each combination if you would like.
- Because of the repeats in lessons, you may hold several lessons simultaneously as long as each of the four houses is given a chance to play. You may not simultaneously hold Gryffindor/Hufflepuff and Gryffindor/Slytherin lessons, since Gryffindors are in both groups.
Posting and Playing
- Threads MUST begin with the start of the lesson, assuming all students are in place. Students must enter as if they are already participating. If a student chooses to post a late entrance, they may be docked house points. Students who make their initial post after the professors second post may also be considered late at the professors discretion.
- Once a professor starts a lesson or posts in the thread, students have 48 Hours to post a response before you may post again. You may choose to hold off your post longer if you are waiting for other students to respond, but we selected this time period for optimum gameplay.
- We suggest asking more open-ended questions and less single-answer questions - such as "When could you use this spell?" rather than "What kind of spell is Alohomora?"
- It is up to the professor to decide how often a student may post within the 48 hour period. You may choose to allow only one or two posts per student for responses, or choose not to set a limit to allow for student interaction.
- Don't forget to log your house points additions/deductions here.
- At the end of your lesson, you should request to have it archived.
- Lessons left unattended by a professor for a period of three weeks or more will be archived and considered incomplete.
