Hermione Granger ★ Auror, British Ministry of Magic
It started with chaos.

Hermione had been in her office when she heard the screaming, the alarms going off. There had not been a report of anything so severe in years, not since You-Know-Who... well, at least then they knew who or what it was. This time they knew nothing, just that people had started disappearing and that spells didn't seem to affect it. Something else was at work, something they hadn't seen before.

"Who is gone?" she yelled into the auror bullpen after surveying the scene, gripping her wand strongly in hand. There were still people scattered, but the roar of noise from the afternoon had been replaced with a strange cacophony of panic. The dust hadn't settled, instead it had dissipated into thin air. She had come out just in time to see one of her best friends in the office screaming and then vanishing.

It didn't make sense. None of it made sense.

"What do we know?" Hermione called out, checking the doors. "Is there an intrusion?"

Tasha had been dragging a rather uncooperative suspect practically by the scruff of his collar when all hell broke loose. First a shattered teacup from a nearby cube on the edge of the bullpen, then her suspect just stopped resisting entirely. She turned around to look as the first screams started and her eyes widened as the scruffy dark-haired man simply...evaporated?

"What the..."

Her head whipped around, scanning the room for a threat, drawing her wand as the alarms went off and more and more of the bullpen's occupants simply ceased to be.

A voice, not screaming. Hermione! She jogged through the office as the screams faded away leaving an eerie silence punctuated by echoing alarms throughout the ministry.

"We don't know a damn thing, Grainger. I haven't ever seen a curse do something like this."

Echoing alarms, indeed. It was unsettling. How many departments had it affected? With the change in sound it clearly hadn't been just them, but how deep did this go?

"If this is a curse..." the auror let out a whistle of an exhale, looking at Natasha. This was too strange, too different. Too wrong. It made it difficult to contain her fears, her emotions, but she had to. It was part of the job, and they wouldn't accomplish anything by panicking.

"The minister," Hermione breathed, eyes widening at the realization. "If she's gone..."

Harry Potter★ Auror, British Ministry of Magic
Harry had been in a meeting with the Minister for the better part of the morning when it happened. Wailing sirens and blaring alarms resonated within the building and the screams that followed after were unlike anything he’d ever heard in his life.

“Stay back,” said Harry to the Minister, his wand at the ready, “I’ll see what this is about.” He ripped open the door expecting to see someone or something attacking, but there was no one. Employees were running and screaming, tripping over each other in panic and fear. Harry struggled to see what the commotion was about until one employee rushed towards him, eyes so wide of freight with arms stretched out, as he all but vanished directly in front of him.

Harry knew immediately that he needed to evacuate the Minister . It was simply too dangerous for her to be there with an unknown threat wrecking havoc upon the Ministry of Magic that nobody seemed capable of handling.

But it was too late.

By the time Harry had shut the door. The woman with the highest ranking title in the Ministry of Magic was already affected . He watched powerlessly as the remaining half of her body dissolved as if nothing about her had ever existed in the first place.

Harry tore open the door and ran as fast as he could to the elevators, dodging fallen objects and people a long the way, but the elevators were on lock down too with the occupants still trapped inside yelling and kicking at the closed gated doors. Wanting to help them but knowing he had more critical situations to attend to, Harry made way for the emergency stairwell and ran as fast as his feet would carry him up to the second floor. The screams had stopped by the time he arrived, but the alarms were still echoing proudly. His heart was racing and his sides ached, but Harry didn’t stop running until he found the very two people he was looking for.

“HERMIONE!” Harry half shouted, half panted. He stood beside Natasha and took a moment to catch his breath, bent over with his hands on his knees. “The Minster...” was all he could get out.

The minister.

Hermione's breath caught in her chest as she processed the information. Harry was here, at least, and Natasha...but the minister was gone. Was it an attack, then? She'd never seen anything like this, none of them had. Nothing in all of her training had taught her how to deal with this, and the only thing she could recall from her past was...

Well, it sent shivers down her spine. She didn't want to think about that.

And you-know-who had been gone for years. This was not his work.

"What do we do?" she asked, her voice more pained than she would have liked as she glanced between Natasha and Harry.

"Should we lock everything down? What about the minister's aides? And the people in holding down in the courtrooms..."

Her mind was going a mile a minute, and none of this was making any sense.

"I've never seen anything like this..." Tasha replied, still trying to gather her thoughts after hearing that the minister was really gone. "We need to gather everyone who's left standing...if nothing else to see how far down the order of succession we're going to have to go to find a replacement minister..."

She drew her wand as the alarms continued to echo throughout the halls, and murmured and incantation while waving it with a flourish. The alarms silenced, leaving the trio in an eerie silence--seemingly the only ones left in this department at least.

Tasha exhaled sharply, "If I was able to shut all of those off like that, there's probably a good chance we're the highest-ranking people in the building."
